Although most Dulcimer players probably think of John Rea when they think of Irish Hammered Dulcimer players, Derek Bell was probably more famous Worldwide as an Irishman who played, amongst other instruments, the Hammered Dulcimer, although of course he actually liked to call it a Timpan.
Anyway, here's a piece on Derek which might interest you:Derek Bell

Thanks for posting the article about Derek Bell. I had the pleasure of jamming next to Derek twice on stage at two different Chieftain's concerts. Both times I had my harp, not my hammered dulcimer, but it was such a thrill to sit along side him and play. I still have a picture of us together posted on our website under 'fun photos' (see http://www.thenextchapter.net). As mentioned in the article, he did have a thing about his socks and pointed them out to me immediately when I sat down beside him. The other fun memory I have of Derek is that after we had completed the rowsing finale and the crowd jumped to it's feet applauding and cheering, he pulled me aside to show me photos of his cat!. There we are, with the audience whooping it up and Derek and I are on stage looking at snapshots of his beloved feline friend! He was an amusing guy and I'm sure glad I got to meet him before he passed on.

Hi hdgal,Interesting. I remember reading somewhere that John Rea also played with them on stage .... I wonder how many times?
Nice photo of you & Derek! I wonder what ever happened to his beloved cats. You don't have them, do you?

Documentary on BBC 4 last night, Friday 14th March, Legends: The Chieftains, had some great shots of Derek Bell playing his Tiompan. I think it's on again but not I'm sure when.

Yes it was a really good documentary on the Chieftains, and also the one that followed it on how Hibernian became Celtic. I don't know, you wait for good programmes on traditional music for months on end and then they put two on the same night - not even time to get up and make a cup of tea between the two! Jenny4dulc
