Hi there Ptarmigan ... Elaine de Saxe here from Deception Bay, 40klms north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Even less than a beginner since I own a Hammered Dulcimer and all the trimmings but have yet to pick up a hammer and follow the instructions in the beginner's manuals I have bought. The instrument is a Dusty Strings Apprentice which I was very fortunate to pick up for just over 50 Australian dollars on eBay. It's in perfect condition as far as I can see, I have the tuner so one day I'll tune it and get a move on. Meantime, I'm taking in the different styles of the many CDs I've bought. I've even joined the Australian Hammered Dulcimer Association - all 30 members Aus-wide. Not a really popular instrument here! ;D I heard my first hammered dulcimer about 3 months ago and after finding out something about it, started to buy CDs since the prices of instuments was and still is well beyond my means. Then this one that I have popped up on eBay, being offered by a newbie at the starting bid of $1. I figured it's a once in a lifetime opportunity so I snaffled it. And one day I'll pick up those hammers ... Anyway, I'm 64 years young, next birthday is less than a month away so 65 is closer than the horizon . I've a delightful partner who shares her first name with me (confused?) and a birth month but not year. We're both keen organic gardeners growing veges, herbs and fruit trees with Australian indigeneous plants. She loves the hammered dulcimer too as she shares my current hobby of mechanical organs. Not that I own one nor probably ever will, but I'm the newsletter editor and webmistress for the Australian Mechanical Organ Society (about as many members as the dulcimer assoc.) see the website: homepage.mac.com/ozorgans/. So - greetings from Oz (not the one in Kansas ) where it's winter and fairly dry and I water the garden with the rinse water from the washing machine since we're in a drought but winter is our dry time here in the sub-tropics. Best regards to hammerers everywhere Elaine

Hello again Elaine, Thanks for a very interesting intro letter too. So you haven't actually started to play yet! ;D Ah well, I hope this site will help to kick start your journey. That sounds like a real bargain you got there too, on Ebay, congrats. So there are 30 H-D players 'hiding' in OZ eh? ;D I look forward to reading all about your musical progression on your H-D, here, over the coming weeks, months & years! Cheers Dick
