how similar are the santoor ( iranian) and the dulcimer? can music be interchanged and are the tunings similar? i am new to dulcimer but would like to play some middle eastern music.

Hello Amanda, and welcome ! Iguess some people on this site will be able able to tell you more, but the santur has different tunings, depending on the mode you're playing in. Iranian music is quite different from western music. It also has different temperaments, sounding sometimes nearly not in tune at first listening for our occidental ears. I think the best you can do is to listen to iranina music on santur... I do think you'll hear the difference at once ! I've heard reels and jigs played on santur, but not the reverse... but that's maybe because I just didn't have the chance...

oh so i guess its not so easy to interchange unless you got a dulcimer with the chessmen to you could re tune? but if you have heard jigs and reels on a santoor then that seems a bit more encouraging. An iranian friend of mine has asked her brother to get her a santoor so I will have a look if/ when it arrives.
