I'd be interested for this forum to build up a list of dulcimer use in contemporary popular music. I've had one sighting, reported from a local techno music enthusiast, of dulcimer-techno fusion - I'll get names and more info when I next meet him. The new Super Furry Animals from Wales feature dulcimer on their newest album 'Hey,Venus' - check out the track entitled 'Carbon Dating' to get a flavour. Any others to add to this small sample? Interesting idea Jenny. I'll keep this at the top here & see what folks can come up with.
I'm not sure if many members here actually listen to much in the way of techno fusion music though!
Still, I'm sure we'll all be checking with our kids & grandchildren to see how they can help!
Anyway, here's the link to the sound file:Carbon Dating

Another track - 'Suckers' , also from 'Hey,Venus', has dulcimer featured picking out the melody of the song, rather than just sustained tremolo effects in the intro.as in 'Carbon Dating'. Jenny4dulc.

I believe the last CD from Beck had a dulcimer toward the end of the song "Farewell Ride."

Hi Cooper, here in in Switzerland we have a hackbrett improvisation group, called Tunex : only impro, with from 3 to twelve hackbrett ;D big sound... But one of the guys playing with us did a few experiences with techno music : he's called Remo Crivelli, and I think you'll find the link to his site on the hackbrett links thread of this forum. You can also look for Tobi Tobler : wonderful jazz player.... on hackbrett !

Thanks for telling me about that! I am going through his web site right after I type this.
There was hammered dulcimer in part of the sound track for the TV show Firefly too.

Sorry< Jenny, I was too quick to answer, and didn't see you were the one who started the thread. ther's also a chap in Germany called Rudi Zapf : the first virtuoso student to come out of the Richard Strauss Konservatorium in Munich, plays a lot of classical music on hackbrett (Bach, Bartok...). but he used to play in a group called "Never Been There", where he plays a (quote) electroacoustic modified chromatic pedal hammered dulcimer". and that was in 1989. I don't know what he does now, but maybe if you google his name, you'll get more infos...

Speaking of Hammered Dulcimer in popular music Jenny, you might like to know that Irish Eurovision Song Contest winner Eimear Quinn has just released her new CD O Holy NightI was lucky enough to be asked, so I'm actually playing my Hammered Dulcimer on three tracks.
It is good to see ye olde H-D getting an airing in lots of different music & not being pigeon holed.
Cheers Dick

The three tracks are: Silent Night, O Come O Come Emmanuel & The Season Has Come, but remember Rick, the H-D is used very much in the background of these tracks, but you can hear it.
Rick, I haven't looked in the Record shops for it yet. In any case, I'm sure I won't be going with Eimear Quinn, on her next World tour.
Cheers Dick

Sour Times by Portishead has a hammered dulcimer sampled from Lalo Schifrin's Danube Incident. Makes the song!

If any of you have seen the film Gladiator, you may have noticed that the song played of the final credits has hammered dulcimer in it. The song is called Now We are Free, and is written by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard. Lisa plays Yangqin and sings in it. See this video: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=PsVLOa1x3zo&feature=related
