Hello, I'm a total novice (on any instrument) and I heard the HD for the first time last January in the US. I found myself appreciating music I never imagined I would enjoy. The sincere way the HD presents Celtic, Traditional American and old favourite hymns displays the wide range that can be accomplished with real style. Being half Scottish I have always appreciated the pipes. Convincing my wife I should buy a HD was no contest when given the pipes as an alternative!!
I take delivery, after months of research, of my HD in September in the USA. It is a 16/15 made by Cara Lindsey of David's Dulcimers USA. Cara is a very accomplished player, neice of Russell Cook (Masterworks) and daughter of David Lindsey (Davids Dulcimer's, who's sound I like), she has great mentors! The HD has a figured mahogany soundboard and cocobolo end rails. It looks terrific! Now I simply need to learn how to bring it to life!
I will be back from the US mid October, and was considering booking a place at Launde. Is that appropriate for someone with no ability to play, but a passionate desire to learn? I don't want to lurk about on the fringe like a complete dweeb! I'd appreciate an honest response?
Glad to know you,
clanross

Hey Clanross! Welcome to the dulcimer! Now you can buy and/or make, all sorts of hammers to figure out what wood and/or wood combination sounds best for each piece of music ;-). Though I can't help you with your question about Launde I think you've made a good decision in picking a dulcimer from David's Dulcimers, especially for a first instrument. I am currently trying to decide between one of his chromatic spinets, or the Bill Spence Edition with chromatic option. My quandary is the big sound of a floating sound board and is that what I want. I feel that the sound and quality of these instruments is outstanding. Anyway, welcome to the dulcimer. You may also want to check out the discussion section of the Everything Dulcimer website, www.everythingdulcimer.com/discuss. These folks are very friendly and willing to aid a novice. Regards, Ed

Thanks Ed for your comments, especially about the sound produced by Davids Dulcimers. It's comforting to know you think I made the right choice.
Visited Everything Dulcimer. It's a great site. Thanks.
