OK So when is the last time you played with a Hackbrett player? I was fortunate enough to play with one just last night, for lucky me, Nikita Pfister your other moderator, is over here for a few days, enjoying the Causeway Coast. Anyway, I'm sure it was rather rare for any Irish pub to be honoured with the presence of Hackbrett & Dulcimer on the same night. I must say, his chromatic Hackbrett has FIVE strings for each of note & it gives a gorgeous warm, full sound without being too loud & quite honestly makes a HD sound rather thin & weak in comparison. That might be something for HD makers to look at, but before you all rush out to buy one, may I warn you that Nikita's own instrument cost in the region of £5,000, with a brilliant & discreet damper system included, of course! Anyway, here are a few Hackbrett YouTubes to give you an idea of their rich sound & get you in the mood! Swiss Hackbrett ~ 1Swiss Hackbrett ~ 2Swiss Hackbrett ~ 3Note the long hammers, held between the 1st & 2nd finger! Nikita tells me those slow tunes where they play in 5ths are typical Swiss tunes & they call that Yodel music. There's an example of that music in song in this video: Zuger Kantonale JodlervereinigungJodlervereinigung .... there's a word you don't see written here on ED very often! Cheers Dick

Here are a few shots from the Springhill Bar, Portrush, our kitchen & the following night's session in Tom's, The House of McDonnell, Ballycastle. No room for Hackbrett, sadly, but a wonderful Accordion session! Cheers Dick

Looks like a great time guys. If Nikita is passing through Glasgow on a Saturday afternoon he would be made welcome in Babbity Bowsters.
