Hi there
With a heavy heart I am selling my beautiful dulcimer. I simply do not play it enough as I spend most of my time on my tenor guitar. Please contact me for more photos - I will be away over the weekend of 12-15th April but will be in contact next week. The dulcimer is for sale for £1400 or very near offer.
This is Alec's Linnett model with extra 16th bass course, damper system and additional tristander stand and Dusty Strings bag. Also included in the sale are 4 sets of hammers - two superb sets made by Alec (one with leather playing surface and one with bare wood) and two sets of santur hammers which are very beautiful indeed. The dulcimer is made with solid woods throughout (no plywood), mainly of mahogany wood with birds eye maple around the tuning pins and boxwood binding. Alec hand builds the instruments in a jig which creates a backward bend that keeps the tuning very stable - and it certainly keeps its tuning very well, way better than other dulcimers I have played. The instrument is customised and features the extra 16th course which has three strings (rather than the usual two) and is set up to play a DAD drone which is a very nice effect. This course can be set up with normal strings if required. Alec's damper bar system is superb and uses brake cable and a specially engineered footpedal to create a very sensitive method of damping the strings which is far superior to some USA dulcimers which simply use string!
The tristander system has legs that unscrew and are fully adjustable in height. The legs fit into the bag and the whole system was fitted as the dulcimer was built by Alec. The playing height and angle of the dulcimer can therefore be fully adjusted to suit.
I have owned the instrument since new and have used it to play music for the Shadow Theatre company that I run. It has been taken to about 20 performances and has picked up a few scratches and a couple of very small dings. I have photos of these on request. Otherwise the instrument is in very beautiful condition and the scratches in no way affect the playability of the instrument.
Hammer dulcimers usually have the bass course 5th tuned and I have the strings to do this. I have been experimenting with the bass being octave tuned (chicago tuning) which I think works very well. I can supply the instrument with either 5th tuned or octave tuned bass strings to your preference.
To order new, everything in this sale would cost over £2100. The dulcimer is £1350 and then £395 for the damper system. The tristander cost me £280 and the bag was £90.
Please contact me by email: story.music@googlemail.com if you have any questions and I will respond promptly. I would rather that the dulcimer was collected from my house - I may consider postage but packing may be expensive and I would not take responsibility for any problems resulting from postage.
