I've just carried out a survey of the ages of our forum's members.
Would it surprise you to learn that the average age of our 74 members is actually 47!
So can anyone tell me, or perhaps hazard a guess as to why Dulcimers attract so many OLD FARTS?
Being in the 'Old Fart' bracket myself, I know why I was attracted to the instrument & it was actually as much about it becoming extinct over here in Northern Ireland, as the sound it made!
Any thoughts?
Cheers Dick

well, lessee........i WAS NOT an old fart when i started. was a sweet young thing in my thirties. t'enny rate, mebbe a more 'stay at home' mentality is required for dulcimers. you just don't see many around a campfire, or at the beach. 'cept for me, o'course. would love to run into someone else who hauls theirs around everywhere like i do.

I guess if 47 is an old fart, then I have to confess I was one when I started on dulcimer and am one now. I was 51 when I started playing. Of course, I don't consider myself old, even a few years later. Now the fart part, well, I guess I'll have to leave that up to others, but old? Nah! t'enny rate, mebbe a more 'stay at home' mentality is required for dulcimers. you just don't see many around a campfire, or at the beach. 'cept for me, o'course. would love to run into someone else who hauls theirs around everywhere like i do. They are around.

Dunno if I'm an Old Fart... I started playing Hackbrett more than 2o years ago (next year; I'll be having a jubilee : 30 years accordion playing, and 25 years hackbrett ! )... and I'm just over the average age... and I have a pupil that's 13... maybe it's just HD players ha ha

Yep - I was an old fart 2½ years ago when I started playing - I was 47. So, that makes me 50 now, and I AM a card-carrying member of the AARP, and proud of it!
My Dad is 93, and still playing golf 4 and 5 times a week - with any luck, I'll have his genes, and have many many more years to learn to play!

I used to be a card carring member - just to say I was in the same organization as my mother-in-law. Not any more, though. I got nothing out of it. My Dad is 93, and still playing golf 4 and 5 times a week - with any luck, I'll have his genes, and have many many more years to learn to play! So, you're wearing his jeans? Does he know it? I certainly hope so!

So can anyone tell me, or perhaps hazard a guess as to why Dulcimers attract so many OLD FARTS? Because it took us that long to get smart? No, wait! This is it! The accumulated wisdom of the years finally brought us to our senses and we started to play dulcimers! ;D
