Thanks for posting these on here! I really enjoyed watching them. #10 and 14 are no longer there it seems, but the rest are great!

I noticed that in #30 that Vance is talking and playing at the same time! Very tricky for me to do that.

NEVER! This is just propaganda from the Electronic Music Resistance! Do not let them dazzle you with their amazing technology and their awesome drum machines! It will only lead to us all playing "Key-Tars" with hammered dulcimer samples and that may even lead to wearing 80's clothing:

... in Germany (and Switzerland !) they're making electric hackbretts : with strings, but the sound board -case? - is just a plank, with E-guitar mikes... Ideal for a heavy metal version of "Down by the Old PLank Road... ;D

Hmmmm. I just did a google search for Keytar and that picture came up (and I am still laughing at it). I had not looked at that show until now... So, I would say I am the guy with the black hair.

What impresses me (that is, if I was impressed by a machine) is how that synth drum machine looking thing simulates the rolling so well (almost too well).

I have a Roland workstation, the Fantom x8. It is a digital piano, keyboard, synthesizer and sampler in all one place.. no need for computer to edit and burn cd anymore.
The rolling effect is great , even the classical guitar playing arpeggios and broken chords sounds so realistic.

I have watched the "Rakes of Kildare" played on the Oakwood posting several times becuase the arrangement is simple, the playing elegant and the instrument sounds good and in tune, dispite coming over the net . . .

Yes I agree Alan, .... & then I wondered why

The reason, I think this version works so well for me, is because the player sticks faithfully to the original tune, both in note & in style.
So there are none of those dreadful Dulcimer type flurries, which are so easy to do on a Dulcimer, but which add absolutely nothing to a tune & in fact, for me at least, destroy the very essence.

For this reason, sorry to say, there is lots of H-D playing that just turns me off, straight away.

I feel, if I am playing an Irish tune, I owe it to the tune, the composer & the tradition, to at least make an effort to play it in an Irish style. By the same token, if a musician is more used to playing Old Time music or Scottish music or Jazz, then I feel he or she, if they are not going to make it sound Irish, then they should at least make the effort to make the tune sound like a genuine OT, or a Scottish or a Jazz tune. That'd be fine with me.

However, what really grates with me is when you hear musicians who just seem to be throwing in bunches of notes here, there & everywhere, without any apparent regard for the tradition. If they are just learning then that might excuse them, but really, if you are only learning a tune, I think you should keep it simple, until you have the core melody pretty solid, then you should add the right sort of decorations to suit the genre, not just throw a lot of notes like spaghetti at it & hope that the resulting clutter will somehow do.

The worst offenders I think are those triplets. They are so easy to do, and can sound first class when used sparingly & in the right places, but when added ad infinitum, they can totally destroy all around them ...... like some form of crazy mindless Dulcimer-Gatling Gun!

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

Anyway, for an example of very, very tasteful playing indeed, that for me at least, sticks beautifully to the English traditional way of playing, you just have to listen to Jenny's clips above. Many people sadly seem to be so busy trying to impress all around with their ability to rattle out notes, that they forget all about the poor wee tune, lost somewhere in the middle of their noise! However, in complete contrast, in those two clips above, it is so obvious that for Jenny, the tune is the single most important element of her playing & because of that approach, her technical ability, or should I say mastery, just shines through.

I agree entirely with Dick here. Another good youtube example, I think, is kenhardtofind (sorry, I can't get to youtube just now to provide a link).
This is nothing new of course, if you compare the sound clip of The Rae Family with the Glasgow Dulcimer Group clip at
www.jackbethel.co.nr there is a huge difference in playing style. I know which I prefer and if I played in the style of the old Scottish players I wouldn't last long in a session. The thing is, they were playing for a different type of audience and played a mixture of dance tunes and popular songs but this wouldn't necessarily go down very well at a folk club or festival. Probably a non-folk audience (if you know what I mean) would enjoy the flashier, fancier style than just playing tunes that, to them, all sound the same anyway.

Dick, I've copied the Rae Family set from the People's Palace concert in 1985 onto my pc. The file is too big to email but if you want I can put it on a cd and post it to you. The concert was recorded by Lindsay Porteous and the Rae Family part lasts about 20mins. including introductions.
